Tom Stanley is away this week but producer Daniel Hussey is here to summarise the Podcast Best Bets from Sandown, Haydock & Leicester.
Another mixed card as the flat season picks up while the jumps reaches its conclusion.
Delighted to have debutant Charlie Poste joining Team Matchbook this week, along with the ever-reliable Sam Turner.
10 races to cover and we did it all in 36 minutes!
Between the three of us let’s hope we guide you to a winner or two over the weekend…

ITV Saturday
13:50 Sandown – Novices’ Final Handicap Hurdle
On to the last of the jumps in the UK this year and I agree with Sam on the favourite Knappers Hill who was 4.0 at the time of recording. He also thinks Dibble Decker could go well at a price, while Charlie reckons Boombawn is the bet at the prices.
- Sam – Knappers Hill / Dibble Decker (win/place)
- Dan – Knappers Hill
- Charlie – Boombawn
14:25 Sandown – Oaksey Chase
I couldn’t decide between the top three in the betting here so happy to leave it alone. Charlie made the case for his ‘cliff horse’ in Saint Calvados. Sam is taking him on with the favourite Mister Fisher.
- Sam – Mister Fisher
- Dan – No bet
- Charlie – Saint Calvados
15:00 Sandown – Celebration Chase
I reckon this is the race of the day and Nube Negra is the one to beat given the fresh angle and the ground drying out potentially even further before the off. Charlie agrees but Sam is going with the Paul Nicholas horse (shock horror) Greaneteen who will have been targeted at this race.
- Sam – Greaneteen
- Dan – Nube Negra
- Charlie – Nube Negra
15:32 Sandown – B365 Gold Cup
This is another race that is shaping up into a belter. Plenty of strands of form here from last year’s renewal to the Scottish Grand National earlier this month. All three of us were very impressed with Win My Wings that day and she could just be better than these but given the extra weight, we all swerve her. Sam and Charlie are in agreement on the runner-up of that race being the one to beat here in Kitty’s Light while I take a swing at the 4th in Fidux who could be overpriced at 25.0 and still well-handicapped. Drying ground is a plus.
- Sam – Kitty’s Light
- Dan – Fidux (win/place)
- Charlie – Kitty’s Light

14:05 Haydock – Great Shevington Handicap
I sit the two Saturday Flat cards on ITV but Sam goes with Boardman here at the prices while Charlie thinks Silver Samurai could go well.
- Sam – Boardman
- Dan – No bet
- Charlie – Silver Samurai
14:45 Leicester- King Richard III Stakes
No bet for Charlie at Leicester but Sam thinks any of the three runners could win here. At the prices, he marginally comes down on Happy Power but not his strongest fancy of the weekend.
- Sam – Happy Power
- Dan – No bet
- Charlie – No bet
Saturday Best Lays
Sam goes for place laying Win My Wings (I considered this but couldn’t put myself through watching her absolutely bolt up again), while myself and Charlie are going for the Nube Negra angle and laying Greaneteen.
- Sam – Place Lay Win My Wings 2.5 (15:32 Sandown)
- Dan – Lay Greaneteen 2.62 (15:00 Sandown)
- Charlie – Lay Greaneteen 2.62 (15:00 Sandown)
Saturday Best Bets
Potentially a nice Trixie here which you can do on Matchbook.
- Sam – Boardman 6.5 (win/place) (14:05 Haydock)
- Dan – Fidux 26.0 (win/place) (15:32 Sandown)
- Charlie – Nube Negra 2.62 (15:00 Sandown)
Best of luck!
Sandown Friday
13:50 Esher Cup
One of the few races on the card this weekend where we all have a different selection each. Sam made a strong case for Nuvolari as a bit of a value angle, Charlie liked Al Marmar while I think Ring of Beara is the most solid horse in the race and could improve for the step up to the mile on his first run back.
- Sam – Nuvolari (win/place)
- Dan – Ring of Beara (win/place)
- Charlie – Al Marmar
14:25 Gordon Richards Stakes
Agreement amongst the panel for this one with Mostahdaf a solid favourite at 1.78 on Matchbook at the time of writing.
- Sam – Mostahdaf
- Dan – Mostahdaf
- Charlie – Mostahdaf
15:00 Group 2 Mile
Sam and Charlie take each other on here with Sam thinking there’s a bit of value in siding with Mutasaabeq. I tentatively agree at the prices but Charlie reckons Alcohol Free is rock solid.
- Sam – Mutasaabeq
- Dan – Mutasaabeq
- Charlie – Alcohol Free
15:35 Classic Trial
Found this one too tough so sat it out. Both Sam and Charlie agree on the favourite Goldspur being the one to beat here.
- Sam – Goldspur
- Dan – No bet
- Charlie – Goldspur
Friday Best Lays
I’m following Sam in here with his Alcohol Free lay at the current prices.
- Sam – Lay Alcohol Free 1.7 (15:00 Sandown)
- Dan – Lay Alcohol Free 1.7 (15:00 Sandown)
- Charlie – No lay
Friday Best Bets
I’m taking a swing at Ring of Beara win and place, Sam likes Al Qareem in the last at Sandown while Charlie thinks Mistahdaf won’t be beaten.
- Sam – Al Qareem 3.75 (16:40 Sandown)
- Dan – Ring of Beara 11.0 (win/place) (13:50 Sandown)
- Charlie – Mostahdaf 1.78 (14:25 Sandown)
