Tom Stanley returns with Donn McClean and Steve Jones to preview the weekend’s action from Newbury, Market Rasen and the Irish Oaks.
The pick of the racing comes from Ireland in the form of the Irish Oaks but it’s not the most competitive renewal since Tuesday wasn’t confirmed with Emily Upjohn now out.
That’s where we start and the betting opportunities pick up as we progress through the ITV action.

15:45 Curragh – Irish Oaks
Only Donn with a betting opinion and that comes in the shape of Emily Dickinson who he argues is way overpriced in form. He’d also have a small lay of favourite Emily Upjohn (now a non-runner) given her price. Very much a watching brief for Steve and I.
- Tom – No bet
- Steve – Emily Upjohn (non-runner)
- Donn – Emily Dickinson (w/p)
13:50 Newbury – B365 Stakes
Cadillac shaped with promise on first start for his new yard and Donn and I make him the one to beat here. Steve’s shout is very much a price selection but he’s one of a few today who Steve thinks is far too big in the market on form.
- Tom – Cadillac
- Steve – Tasman Bay
- Donn – Cadillac
14:06 Market Rasen – 2m7f Handicap Hurdle
A change of headgear seems key to Galileo Silver and I like him in the first-time visor, as does Donn. Steve was impressed with Apache Creek last time and he’s not gone up too much given he only just does enough.
- Tom – Galileo Silver
- Steve – Apache Creek
- Donn – Galileo Silver
14:21 Newbury – Highclare Castle Gin Cup Stakes
Reshoun did well from a wide draw and trip last time and he’ll do for Donn. Withhold looks well treated according to Steve and is a decent price as a previous winner of this race. I’m looking at a younger horse in the form of Diamond Bay who should appreciate the return to 2 miles..
- Tom – Diamond Bay
- Steve – Withhold
- Donn – Reshoun
14:41 Market Rasen – Summer Handicap Hurdle
Wolf Prince was a very good juvenile in Ireland and he’s well treated on peak form. He looked better last time when going forward argues Donn and he hopes they’ll employ similar tactics here. Steve thinks Galata Bridge fits the bill after his Huntingdon romp.
- Tom – Wolf Prince
- Steve – Galata Bridge
- Donn – Wolf Prince
14:56 Newbury – Hackwood Stakes
Steve thinks this distance will be ideal for Saint Lawrence who is way overpriced. Donn likes the very consistent Happy Romance with everything in her favour here whilst I’ll have one last go at Minzaal who probably has the best form based on his third in the Champions Sprint but is yet to fire this term.
- Tom – Minzaal
- Steve – Saint Lawrence (w/p)
- Donn – Happy Romance
15:14 Market Rasen – Summer Plate Handicap Chase
Maybe the breathing operation has helped Manofthemountain and he’s worth another go says Steve. Donn thinks Mahler’s Promise is a big price albeit this is a step up in grade. I’m pretty sweet on last year’s winner who will surely be involved off just two pounds higher than 12 months ago.
- Tom – Franky Du Berlais
- Steve – Manofthemountain
- Donn – Mahler’s Promise
15:30 Newbury – Weatherbys Super Sprint Stakes
The best bet for me here in the form of Maria Branwell. I think she has the best form and Donn points out she’s getting weight from nearly half the field. Steve is looking a little further down the betting to Dare To Hope for a yard with an excellent record in this.
- Tom – Maria Branwell
- Steve – Dare To Hope (w/p)
- Donn – Maria Branwell
Any Other Bets
- Tom – Trillium (14:08 Newbury FRIDAY)
- Steve – Approachability (15:28 Ripon)
- Donn – No AOB
Best Lays
- Tom – Lay Julia Augusta (16:05 Newbury)
- Steve – No Lay
- Donn – Against Emily Upjohn (non-runner)
Best Bets
- Tom – Maria Branwell (15:30 Newbury)
- Steve – Approachability (15:28 Ripon)
- Donn – Happy Romance (14:56 Newbury)
Best of luck!
