Our podcast team have been in terrific form and Tom Stanley is back to guide you through this week’s selections…

Good punting week with the Chester Cup and Victoria Cup – if big field handicaps are your thing.

We have the usual best bets and best lays, the latter of which we were 4 from 4 with last week as detailed below:

  • Tom – Place Lay Tenebrism (15:40 Newmarket Sun)
  • Steve – Lay Epatante if 2.0 (15:50 Punchestown)
  • Charlie – Lay Primo Bacio (14:40 Goodwood)
  • Deasy – Place Lay Astro King (Thirsk Hunt Cup) at 2.5 or less 4 Places

15:15 Friday – Chester Cup

Tough handicap to kick things off and I’m with Reshoun who ran in this last year. He’s had a prep this time and looks too big at 21.0. Steve makes the case for Morph Speed win and place whilst Charlie thinks the 7.5 about Aidan O’Brien’s Cleveland is too big.

  • Tom – Reshoun
  • Steve – Morph Speed (w/p)
  • Charlie – Cleveland

13:45 Ascot – Local Schools Art Competition Handicap

Both Steve and Charlie are with Juan De Montalban on second start for new yard. He should strip fitter for his first start and is back on better ground. I want to play something drawn wide and Gold Maze looks a big price on first start for Jamie Osborne at 23.0.

  • Tom – Gold Maze
  • Steve – Juan De Montalban (w/p)
  • Charlie – Juan De Montalban (w/p)

14:05 Lingfield – 7f Handicap

Just two of us involved. Charlie has a tentative bet in the form of Veraeaux Eagle whilst I’m chancing the lightly raced Ex Gratia for a trainer I think is consistently underestimated.

  • Tom – Ex Gratia
  • Steve – No bet
  • Charlie – Vereaux Eagle

14:20 Ascot – Carey Group Buckhounds Stakes

Too trappy for me. Charlie thinks Stowell needed the run at Newbury and he’s his bet of the day. Steve thinks Universal Order is the overpriced one in a race where the favourite could be vulnerable. For Me Al Aasy is all about the ground – he wants some cut and I’ll take him on if there’s firm in the going description.

  • Tom – No bet
  • Steve – Universal Order (w/p)
  • Charlie – Stowell

14:40 Lingfield – Derby Trial Stakes

Team steam here in the form of the outsider of the field at 11.0. Lionel is highly regarded by his trainer and shaped very well at Newbury. It’s a hot race but he’s the value.

  • Tom – Lionel (non-runner)
  • Steve – Lionel (non-runner)
  • Charlie – Lionel (non-runner)

15:00 Haydock – Swinton Handicap Hurdle

Steve likes Sebastopol back over hurdles whilst Charlie is with Severance after a good run at Aintree for his in-form yard. I like the latter too but save the selection for the Ayr Champion Hurdle winner who was good value for her win.

  • Tom – Anna Bunina
  • Steve – Sebastopol (w/p)
  • Charlie – Severance (w/p)

15:15 Lingfield – Oaks Trial Fillies’ Stakes

Can’t find an angle and there’s not a good deal of confidence here to be honest. Steve goes for Speak win and place whilst for a yard going along very nicely. Charlie is with the market leader up in trip.

  • Tom – No bet
  • Steve – Speak (w/p)
  • Charlie – Emily Dickinson

15:30 Ascot – British EBF Fillies’ Stakes

This track and trip suit the strong travelling Don’t Tell Claire and I think she’s overpriced. Steve is with a filly who has form with my selection and is a bigger price whilst Charlie is with Spirit Of The Bay who went close at Doncaster last time. The yard are in great form.

  • Tom – Don’t Tell Claire
  • Steve – Serenading
  • Charlie – Spirit Of The Bay

15:50 Lingfield – Chartwell Fillies’ Stakes

Another team steam in the form of She Do. Charlie is probably strongest on her with Steve not far behind. She ran some excellent races last year and looks the sort to kick on this season. I think seven furlongs here will be ideal.

  • Tom – She Do
  • Steve – She Do
  • Charlie – She Do

16:05 Ascot – Victoria Cup

Fresh is my best of the day and I think Chiefofchiefs has plenty going for him too. Oo De Lally is potentially drawn well and 26.0 at the time of recording for Charlie. Steve’s selection is also drawn high and has one of the best claimers around in the saddle.

  • Tom – Fresh / Chiefofchiefs
  • Steve – Vafortino
  • Charlie – Oo De Lally (non-runner)

Best Lays

  • Tom – Lay Al Aasy if firm in going description (14:40 Ascot)
  • Steve – No lay
  • Charlie – Lay Kings Lynn (15:45 Chester Friday)

Best Bets

  • Tom – Fresh (16:05 Ascot)
  • Steve – Serenading (15:30 Ascot)
  • Charlie – Stowell (14:20 Ascot)

Best of luck!
