Best Podcast Bets Epsom Cazoo Derby

Tom Stanley is here to summarise the Podcast Best Bets covering the Cazoo Oaks and Derby from Sam Turner and Charlie Poste.

A fabulous weekend of racing at Epsom and two fascinating Classic races in the Oaks and Derby.

The Cazoo Derby in particular looks tempting betting heat with 17 runners and a strong enough favourite in Desert Crown.

If you were keen on him straight after the Dante you’re likely happy with how well his price has held up.

We start with the Oaks…

Saturday

16:30 Epsom Sat – Cazoo Derby

Sam wants money on the favourite and can’t argue with his price. Both he and Charlie also make a strong case for Star Of India at 17.0. I’m not against Desert Crown but keener to have three on side at prices, best of the lot being Walk Of Stars.

  • Tom – Westover / Walk Of Stars / West Wind Blows
  • Sam – Desert Crown / Star Of India (w/p)
  • Charlie – Star Of India (w/p)

14:00 Epsom Sat – Cazoo Handicap

Ground could be key here and that’s the angle Sam and I want to explore. Mr Big Stuff likes cut and I feel he should be favourite against the untrustworthy Blue Trail. Approachability is interesting too and should lead. Charlie is with Box To Box win and place for a smart young rider (13.0).

  • Tom – Mr Big StuffApproachability (small w/p)
  • Sam – Mr Big Stuff / Approachability (small w/p)
  • Charlie – Box To Box (w/p)

14:35 Epsom Sat – Princess Elizabeth Stakes

Sam and I in agreement again with Bashkirova who wasn’t seen to best effect on quick ground at Goodwood. I think she’s better than these. Charlie likes the other Cheveley Park filly at half a point bigger and makes her his best bet.

  • Tom – Bashkirova
  • Sam – Bashkirova
  • Charlie – Potapova

15:10 Epsom Sat – Cazoo Diomed Stakes

I think the ground holds the key to this and if it’s soft then Modern News is a lay. Sam is sticking with the current favourite though does send a warning regarding the ground. Charlie thinks this is a two horse race and the price about Mutasaabeq is too big.

  • Tom – Lay Modern News
  • Sam – Modern News
  • Charlie – Mutasaabeq

15:45 Epsom Sat – Simpex Express ‘Dash’ Handicap (53:30)

A few going up at big prices in an open race but we agree on a couple. Namely Sunday Sovereign who ran a very good race last time and likes some cut. Mokaatil is popular too having won this last year and has Harry Davies booked.

  • Tom – Sunday Sovereign / Equality
  • Sam – Mokaatil / Sunday Sovereign
  • Charlie – Mokaatil (w/p)

Friday

16:30 Epsom Fri – Cazoo Oaks

Charlie and I are struggling to see past Emily Upjohn. She ticks all the boxes on pedigree and looks very straightforward. Sam is less keen and prefers the price about Concert Hall – 11.0 at the time of recording. The trainers of the horses we’ve put up have won 9 of the last 10 renewals…

  • Tom – Emily Upjohn
  • Sam – Concert Hall (win/place)
  • Charlie – Emily Upjohn

14:00 Epsom Fri – Cazoo Woodcote British EBF Stakes

No strong opinions here. I’m worried about the favourite’s draw and, for all Sam is with Commander Straker, he thinks there’s a chance he’ll go off a bigger price than his current 4.5. I’ll chance Keep Bidding on second start whilst Charlie is with the relatively experienced Blatant.

  • Tom – Keep Bidding
  • Sam – Commander Straker
  • Charlie – Blatant (w/p)

14:35 Epsom Fri – World Pool Handicap (14:00)

Struggling to see past the head of the market with both horses having plenty in their favour. Sam thinks Oh This Is Us will have his day sooner or later and is a fair price at a track he likes. Charlie is with Fireworks for a yard flying along.

  • Tom – Totally Charming (w/p) / Excel Power (w/p)
  • Sam – Oh This Is Us (w/p)
  • Charlie – Fireworks (w/p)

15:10 Epsom Fri – Dahlbury Coronation Cup

Bet of the day for me here in Manobo who I think will like returning to a mile and a half. Sam likes Pyledriver small stakes who was unlucky in Dubai. The 12.0 about Living Legend will do for Charlie and he makes the point that he’ll likely trade shorter in the run.

  • Tom – Manobo
  • Sam – Pyledriver
  • Charlie – Living Legend

15:45 Epsom Fri – Cazoo Handicap

Team steam in the form of Soto Sizzler. He loves the track and a test at this trip is what he wants. He won in cheekpieces last time and keeps those on for a very smart trainer.

  • Tom – Soto Sizzler
  • Sam – Soto Sizzler / Victory Chime (w/p)
  • Charlie – Soto Sizzler

Best Lays

  • Tom – Lay Modern News 2.1 or shorter as long as ground soft (15:10 Saturday)
  • Sam – Place Lay Moktasaab – at 2.0 or lower (15:45 Friday)
  • Charlie – Lay Oscula at 2.0 or lower (17:10 Friday)

Best Bets

  • Tom – Manobo (15:10 Friday)
  • Sam – Soto Sizzler w/p (15:45 Friday)
  • Charlie – Potapova (14:35 Saturday)

Best of luck!
