Cheltenham 2022 Gold Cup Ante-Post Preview

At the time of recording, the betting on the Matchbook Betting Exchange market was:

  • A Plus Tard 4.0
  • Minella Indo 6.2
  • Chantry House 14.0
  • Protektorat 16.0
  • Envoi Allen 19.5
  • Al Boum Photo 19.5
  • Galvin 21.0
  • Delta Work 34.0
  • Champ 38.0
  • Janidil 40.0
  • Fiddlerontheroof 42.0
  • Royal Pagaille 46.0
  • Eldorado Allen 60.0
  • Next Destination 60.0
  • Eklat De Rire 70.0

Deasy broke down the runners into groups, chatting about A Plus Tard, Minella Indo and Al Boum Photo’s chances (last year’s first three in the Gold Cup) first.

We thought A Plus Tard was entitled to do what he did at Haydock last time out, so probably is a tad short at 4.0 to go one better this time round.

Minella Indo made a poor reappearance at Down Royal for the Champion Chase but has been known to start previous seasons slowly and should be primed and fit by the time Cheltenham 2022 comes around in March.

Al Boum Photo’s connections were potentially looking for a new route to the Cheltenham Gold Cup this season, with entries at Aintree and Punchestown in December. However, he will now head to Tramore after all, in what promises to be a great day out on New Years’ Day once again.

Chantry House and Protektorat were given good shout outs from Deasy, and while potentially not being quite at the level of the first two in the market, they could cause trouble if they keep up their good early season form.

Of the rest, Eklat De Rire’s run in the Ladbrokes Trophy was too bad to be true, leaving 70.0 too big if he does indeed recover from that run, while Next Destination (60.0) wasn’t beaten all that far by Galvin (21.0) in the National Hunt Chase last year, yet is three times the price.

In the end, Deasy put up Protekorat to win the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup. See his case below:

I decided to pick Minella Indo as, despite his poor reappearance this season, I think he’s too big a price compared to A Plus Tard, especially considering he beat him fair and square in last season’s renewal.
