Podcast Bets Newcastle, Newmarket & Irish Derby

Tom Stanley returns to summarise the best podcast bets from Adele Mulrennan and Steve Jones…

It’s modest stuff quality-wise post Ascot but we do have the Irish Derby on the agenda and Tuesday’s addition to the race gives us an 8-runner field and a very interesting race.

There are also some deep handicaps at Newcastle including the Northumberland Plate with some chinky places going up.

13:50 Newcastle – 6f Handicap

Too tricky for me. Steve says the race was not run to suit Strike Red last time and he’s unbeaten over this distance at the track. Adele has tipped Sir Titus a few times before and is sticking with him. He’s up in trip which may be the key and is a fair price at 17.0.

  • Tom – No bet
  • Adele – Sir Titus place
  • Steve – Strike Red

14:05 Newmarket – Maureen Brittain Memorial Empress Fillies’ Stakes

Minnetonka was very impressive on debut and should be good enough to take this. I like her draw too, nearer the stands side rail. Adele is with Believing who she says needs to step up mentally but her form is strong (particularly that Mawj race) and she’s overpriced.

  • Tom – Minnetonka
  • Adele – Believing (w/p)
  • Steve – Minnetonka

14:25 Newcastle – Chipchase Stakes

Adele says Glen Shiel showed enough last year and this to suggest he’s up to winning here. He’s a course and distance winner too. Steve likes how Sense Of Duty will be ridden and her form from last time has depth. I’m chancing Happy Power back in trip at 12.0.

  • Tom – Happy Power (w/p)
  • Adele – Glen Shiel
  • Steve – Sense Of Duty

14:40 Newmarket – Fred Archer Stakes

Trappy race is the consensus. I’m the only one with a strong opinion to bet with. I’m against the favourite Rebel’s Romance who may have been finished by the UAE Derby last season. I’ll lay him 2 places and think Stowel is worth a go, just a small win.

  • Tom – Stowell, Lay Rebel’s Romance 2 places
  • Adele – No bet, not a good race for me
  • Steve – Rebel’s Romance (but no bet)

14:55 Newcastle – Northumberland Vase Handicap

Adeel’s selection (Tiger Jet) is 34.0 and thinks he’s crying out for this trip – she reports the trainer is confident. I can see Hollie Doyle controlling things and I like Wise Eagle too. Steve is with Geremia who is 3 from 3 on the all-weather and has good form with Evaluation but is a bigger price here.

  • Tom – Catbird Seat / Wise Eagle (w/p)
  • Adele – Evaluation (w/p) / Tiger Jet place
  • Steve – Geremia

Bet Now

15:15 Newmarket – Criterion Stakes

Steve says Laneqash has the best form and too much is made of him being unlucky. He’s the horse to back her for Adele too. I just worry that both he and Sunray Major are a bit soft and am interested in Art Du Val back in trip.

  • Tom – Art Du Val
  • Adele – Lanequash
  • Steve – Laneqash

15:30 Newcastle – Northumberland Plate Handicap

Adele was impressed with Valley Forge last time and he’s related to plenty of all-weather winners. Rajinsky also gets a mention off the back of his good run in this last year. Steve is with Pirate King who is 34.0 tackling this trip again for the first time in three years. I like Solent Gateway who had no luck last time and is a far bigger price than when running keen in the Chester Cup.

  • Tom – Solent Gateway (w/p)
  • Adele – Valley Forge & Rajinsky, mention Onesmoothoperator
  • Steve – Pirate King (w/p)

15:45 Curragh – Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby

Steve is with the outsider of the bunch at 67.0. Boundless Ocean was unlucky not to finish closer to Hannibal Barca this year and he thinks the top two in the betting are worth taking on. I’m of a similar opinion that it makes sense to play something win and place here and am a big fan of Lionel and his trainer. Adele is sticking with the supplemented Tuesday.

  • Tom – Lionel (w/p)
  • Adele – Tuesday
  • Steve – Boundless Ocean (w/p)

Best Lays

  • Tom – Lay Rebel’s Romance 2 places (14:40 Newmarket)
  • Adele – No lay
  • Steve – No lay

Best Bets

  • Tom – Lionel w/p (Irish Derby) / Biggles (16:38 Newcastle) at 4.5 or bigger
  • Adele – Glen Shiel (14:25 Newcastle)
  • Steve – Sense Of Duty (14:25 Newcastle)
