Matchbook’s Horse Racing Podcast host Tom Stanley gives you a sneak peek at what he and the team are backing for Day 2 at Royal Ascot.

It doesn’t get much better than this.

Five days of Royal Ascot are on the horizon featuring the best horses in the world, and there is a truly International feel to the meeting this year.

We kick off previewing days 1 and 2, a mixture of top-class (if a little uncompetitive in parts) racing and huge-field handicaps to make us dream big.

14:30 Wednesday – Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)

Only two of us are getting involved, but we agree on Dramatised, who looked a bit of a weapon at Newmarket. I also want to back Carmela whose last time-out form looks strong, and she was a touch unlucky at York previously.

  • Tom – Dramatised, Carmela (w/p)
  • Adele – Dramatised, Maria Branwell
  • Rixy – No bet
  • Deasy – No bet

15:05 Wednesday – Queen’s Vase (Group 2)

Anchorage for me, given the trainer and pedigree now up in trip. Rixy is with Godolphin second-string Hafit win and place, and Deasy is looking further down the betting to Baltic Bird. Adele makes a point about the temperament of the favourite potentially being a concern.

  • Tom – Anchorage
  • Adele – No bet
  • Rixy – Hafit (w/p)
  • Deasy – Baltic Bird (w/p)

15:40 Wednesday – Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1)

Bay Bridge for Adele and I, given that performance when apparently half cooked at Sandown. I think he’s potentially the best middle-distance horse around. Rixy wants to lay the Japanese horse two places back in trip and back Grand Glory, whilst Deasy can’t believe the price of last year’s winner Lord North.

  • Tom – Bay Bridge
  • Adele – Bay Bridge
  • Rixy – Grand Glory win & w/o Bay Bridge
  • Deasy – Lord North

16:20 Wednesday – Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2)

Small stakes win and place for me about a filly who should enjoy the nature of this race. Adele thinks Saffron Beach is the best in this and the one to beat. Deasy was taken with Bashkirova at Epsom and is with her to follow up.

  • Tom – Primo Bacio (w/p)
  • Adele – Saffron Beach
  • Rixy – No bet
  • Deasy – Bashkirova

17:00 Wednesday – Royal Hunt Cup

A few going up here so I’ll mention the draw in the main. Rixy thinks it’s generally worth waiting for day 1 before getting too involved. We feel that a quick surface tends to mean high numbers are preferenced and that looks to be where the main pace is in this.

  • Tom – Totally Charming / Bless Him / Etonian
  • Adele – Tempus / Totally Charming
  • Rixy – Sinjaari & Intelligent of interest
  • Deasy – Aratus, Via Serendipity (Small Win, Place)

Any Other Wednesday Bets

  • Tom – Guiteau (Windsor Castle)
  • Adele – No bet
  • Rixy – No bet
  • Deasy – Ffion, Pretty Sweet (Buick booked, 1st time hg, dropping back in trip) (Win/Place) Kensington Palace Stakes

Bet Now

14:30 Tuesday – Queen Anne Stakes (Group 1)

The consensus is Baaeed will not get beaten and Adele makes him a bet (an addition to multiples if nothing else) at current prices. Rixy wants to play Real World in the without market who he comfortably rates the second best horse in the race. Deasy is chancing the mare Lights On at the prices, win and place.

  • Tom – No bet
  • Adele – Baaeed
  • Rixy – Real World w/o Baaeed, but this has the makings of a really messy race
  • Deasy – Lights Out (w/o fav)

15:05 Tuesday – Coventry Stakes (Group 2)

Two shouts for Persian Force, who is two from two and highly regarded. He doesn’t boast Group form as yet, but I’ve been very taken with him to date, as has Adele. Rixy suggests there’s very little between him and Blackbeard on his ratings, but he wants the Irish raider on side and Holguin too, at a price.

  • Tom – Persian Force
  • Adele – Persian Force
  • Rixy – Blackbeard; small win & place on Holguin, but worried about the draw
  • Deasy – No bet

15:40 Tuesday – King’s Stand Stakes (Group 1)

This is simple for me. Place lay the American horse, back the Aussie horse and also Khaadem win and place. Rixy is very much in the Australian camp whilst Adele and Deasy are with Equilateral and Lazuli at big prices.

  • Tom – Nature Strip, Khaadem (w/p), place lay Golden Pal
  • Adele – Lazuli (place)
  • Rixy – Nature Strip
  • Deasy – Equilateral (w/p)

16:20 Tuesday – St James’s Palace Stakes (Group 1)

My best bet here in the form of Lusail win and place. He had no luck in the Guineas but proved he stays. Adele found Berkshire Shadow last year and is with him again in the place market, as is Deasy. Rixy is looking away from the favourite who he thinks might have been a touch flattered at Newmarket given how the race panned out.

  • Tom – Lusail w/o fav & (w/p)
  • Adele – Berkshire Shadow (place)
  • Rixy – Like Angel Bleu & Bayside Boy, but My Prospero w/p the main play, also interested in Mighty Ulysses
  • Deasy – Berkshire Shadow (place)

17:00 Tuesday – Ascot Stakes

Favourite for me but Rixy is worried he’ll not stay. He’s with the Dan Skelton-trained Proschema, who also boasts decent flat form. Adele is siding with last year’s winner as is Deasy, and he also gives a nod to Coltrane at a decent price.

  • Tom – Bring On The Night
  • Adele – Reshoun
  • Rixy – Proschema (w&p)
  • Deasy – Coltrane, Reshoun

Any Other Tuesday Bets

  • Tom – Juan Elcano (17:35 Tuesday)
  • Adele – Juan Elcano w/p (17:35 Tuesday)
  • Rixy – West End Charmer & New Mandate (17:35 Tuesday)
  • Deasy – Cleveland (18:10 Tuesday)

Best Lays

  • Tom – Place Lay Golden Pal
  • Adele – Lay fav for the kings stand
  • Rixy – Lay Shahryar two places in PoW
  • Deasy – No lay

Best Bets

  • Tom – Lusail w/p (16:20 Tuesday)
  • Adele – Persian Force (15:05 Tuesday)
  • Rixy – Nature Strip (15:40 Tuesday)
  • Deasy – Cleveland (18:10 Tuesday)

Best of luck!
