Host Tom Stanley summarises what he and our podcast team are backing for the big one at Aintree!

The big one. Yes, it feels like a lottery, but there are some key points to focus on in finding the right horse. Matt Tombs can help you do that with his Grand National Insights column, and he touches on those points below. We decided to stick with a maximum of three selections each, and there is a little bit of crossover.

17:15 Aintree – Randox Grand National

I won’t explain the reason for each selection but the consensus is that Delta Work has plenty going for him and is definitely a bet now not favourite. Snow Leopardess gets a good mention from Steve and Deasy’s best bet on the day is Discorama (to place).

  • Tom – Dingo Dollar, Delta Work, Death Duty
  • Steve – Longhouse Poet, Dingo Dollar
  • Matt – Enjoy D’allen, Delta Work & Cloth Cap (all win market only)
  • Deasy – Snow Leopardess, Freewheeling Dylan, Discorama

13:45 Aintree – EFT Construction Handicap Hurdle

Two shouts for Whatsnottoknow and both Deasy and Matt want another on side at a price. Steve thinks Dans Le Vent can land another big handicap for a trainer who had a winner on the opening day whilst I’m a big fan of Mill Green who did best of those up with the pace at Cheltenham.

  • Tom – Mill Green, Ilikedwayurthinkin
  • Steve – Dans Le Vent
  • Matt – Whatsnottoknow & If The Cap Fits (win and especially place markets)
  • Deasy – Whatsnottoknow, Emitom (0.25 win/0.75 place)

14:25 Aintree – Mersey Novices’ Hurdle

Too trappy for me. Matt suggests Three Stripe Life has the best form and is the one to beat. Steve likes the up in grade Henderson horse and Deasy thinks the 10.0 about Elle Est Belle is worth taking.

  • Tom – no bet
  • Steve – Walking On Air
  • Matt – Three Stripe Life
  • Deasy – Elle Est Belle

15:00 Aintree – Poundland Maghull Novice’s Chase

Just Matt and I with a bet here and it’s Gentleman De Mee against the favourite. Edwardstone has been brilliant this year and pace on here will suit but we think he’s beatable and the selection was very impressive last time.

  • Tom – Gentleman De Mee
  • Steve – Edwardstone (no bet)
  • Matt – Gentleman De Mee
  • Deasy – Edwardstone (no bet)

15:35 Aintree – Liverpool Hurdle

Two votes for Champ who was very impressive the last time he ran at Aintree. Matt is hoping/thinking they won’t let Flooring Porter have his own way again and wants to back last year’s winner. Deasy thinks Danny Mullins will do it again and makes Flooring Porter a bet at 3.0.

  • Tom – Champ
  • Steve – Champ
  • Matt – Thyme Hill (least strong view of day)
  • Deasy – Flooring Porter

16:15 Aintree – Betway Handicap Chase

All about Shan Bluie here. We know he’s a good stone well-in and 3.5 is very fair. I think he’ll go off shorter. That’s the view of three of the panel with just Steve looking elsewhere.

  • Tom – Shan Blue
  • Steve – Killer Kane
  • Matt – Shan Blue
  • Deasy – Shan Blue

18:20 Aintree – Wetherbys National Hunt Flat Race

I still think Feragl’s are a bit underestimated in this sphere and want to back both his runners win and place. Matt is against the Mullins favourite with second in the betting Ernest Gray and 17.0 shot Western Zephyr.

  • Tom – both Fergal O’Brien’s w/p
  • Steve – No bet
  • Matt – Ernest Gray & Western Zephyr
  • Deasy – No bet
