Saturday Racing Tips

Tom Stanley is joined by Steve, Sam and Donn McClean as they run through what they are backing for Saturday’s racing at The Curragh, Newbury & Market Rasen.

Another Classic weekend as the Irish Oaks takes centre stage and that is where we start. It’s not all that competitive given the presence of the Oaks winner, Snowfall, but we’ve found some small stakes plays in the race. Better betting heats elsewhere, notably at Newbury where we have the 22-runner Super Sprint for juveniles.

Consensus from the team prerecording was that it was a tricky enough weekend so sensible stakes all round.

Irish Oaks (15:25 Curragh)

Steve can’t see past the favourite winning but no official bet for him. Sam and Donn think there’s more to come from Willow and will take her in the without the favourite and place market. I fancy La Jaconde is the likely pace angle and so want her as a trading option in the place market…hopefully five clear two furlongs out!

  • Steve – No bet
  • Sam – Willow place
  • Donn – Willow place
  • Tom – La Jaconde place (trading angle)

Saphire Stakes (14:50 Curragh)

All against the favourite here who has opened up a touch shorter than I expected. Steve is looking to another three-year-old whilst Donn and I hope Eddie Lynham has another good sprinter on his hands with Romantic Proposal who is dropping in trip. She’s Donn’s best bet of the day.

  • Steve – Measure Of Magic
  • Sam – Gustavus Weston
  • Donn – Romantic Proposal BEST BET
  • Tom – Romantic Proposal

Steventon Stakes (13:50 Newbury)

Good race and exciting to see Derab back in action after his fair run in the French Derby. Steve and I think he’s the one to beat and he’s best bet material for Steve. Sam makes a strong case for Ascot winner Real World whist Donn thinks the Stoute horse is the one to be with.

  • Steve – Derab BEST BET
  • Sam – Real World
  • Donn – Solid Stone
  • Tom – Derab

2m Handicap (14:25 Newbury)

Good looking handicap and some strong shouts for Zeeband who could turn into an Ebor horse argues Sam. Donn thinks Scaramanga has plenty more to offer whilst I’m with the winner of this race a few years ago who is dropping back down in grade.

  • Steve – Zeeband
  • Sam – Zeeband
  • Donn – Scaramanga
  • Tom – Withhold

Hackwood Stakes (15:00 Newbury)

My strongest fancy here in the form of King’s Lynn who just didn’t have things go his way at Ascot. Steve thinks Clive Cox’s sprinter might be too good for these and Donn is sticking with last year’s winner.

  • Steve – Diligent Harry
  • Sam – King’s Lynn
  • Donn – Tabdeed
  • Tom – King’s Lynn BEST BET

Super Sprint (15:40 Newbury)

Sam makes the favourite his best on the figures and Donn agrees. Steve and I are far less bullish and want some bigger prices on side given the nature of the race.

  • Steve – Sienna Bonnie / Guilded
  • Sam – Chipotle BEST BET
  • Donn – Chipotle
  • Tom – Desert

Summer Plate (14:40 Market Rasen)

Lots of pace on here and Donn thinks that should suit his selection. It should also suit mine. A few being put up by Sam with Solomon Grey the most confident of them. Steve thinks Peter Bowen is worth siding with in this race given his record.

  • Steve – Franky Du Berlais
  • Sam – Solomon Grey / Exelerator Express
  • Donn – Darling Maltaix
  • Tom – Fire Away

Best of luck!
