We’re in the midst of the Punchestown Festival but Tom Stanley is here to summarise the Podcast Best Bets for Guineas weekend.
Steve Jones, Charlie Poste and Micheál Deasy were our panel this week…
Classic weekend and we’ve got some impressive fields.
Solid declarations (in part perhaps due to the defection of Inspiral on Sunday) for both Guineas make them very interesting betting heats and there are plenty of selections going up across the eight races previewed below.

15:40 Sun – 1000 Guineas
Deasy thinks Wild Beauty ran the perfect trial last time and is too big a price. Steve likes the outsider of the Ballydoyle horses whilst Charlie thinks George Boughey’s Cachet is a big price. I’ll chance Zellie and definitely Mise En Scene who has a much better chance than her price suggests based on her run here last year.
- Tom – Zellie / Mise En Scene (both w/p)
- Steve – Tuesday
- Charlie – Cachet (w/p)
- Deasy – Wild Beauty (w/p)
13:50 Sun – Heritage Handicap 1m6f
Trading angle with Golden Flame for me. Charlie and Deasy think lots of pace will suit Dark Jedi whilst Steve is with Valley Forge for a yard on song.
- Tom – Golden Flame
- Steve – Valley Forge
- Charlie – Dark Jedi
- Deasy – Dark Jedi
14:25 Sun – Pretty Polly Stakes 1m2f
Too tricky for me and not sure there’s a huge amount of confidence floating about here to be honest. Charlie thinks Peripatetic is worth chancing at the prices whilst Deasy and Steve are with the solid horse and team in this.
- Tom – No bet
- Steve – Crenelle
- Charlie – Peripatetic
- Deasy – Crenelle
15:00 Sun – Dahlia Stakes
Strong shouts from Charlie and Steve for Ville De Grace. I can absolutely see that but think there’s a bit too much currently between her and Lilac Road in the betting.
- Tom – Lilac Road
- Steve – Ville De Grace
- Charlie – Ville de Grace
- Deasy – Dreamloper
Best Lays
- Tom – Place Lay Tenebrism (15:40 Newmarket Sun)
- Steve – Lay Epatante if 2.0 (15:50 Punchestown)
- Charlie – Lay Primo Bacio (14:40 Goodwood)
- Deasy – Place Lay Astro King (Thirsk Hunt Cup) at 2.5 or less 4 Places
Best Bets
- Tom – Mise En Scene (15:40 Newmarket Sun) (non-runner)
- Steve – Valley Forge (13:50 Newmarket Sun)
- Charlie – Ville de Grace (15:00 Newmarket Sun)
- Deasy – Tactical (w/p) (13:50 Newmarket Sat)

15:40 Sat – 2000 Guineas
Nobody is officially backing the favourite but I would say, if you want him on side, to consider backing him at a bigger price in the run. Elsewhere we’ve four win and place shouts between us.
- Tom – Point Lonsdale (w/p) / Native Trail bigger in run
- Steve – Eydon (w/p)
- Charlie – Native Trail but no bet
- Deasy – Luxembourg (win) Point Lonsdale (w/p)
13:50 Sat – Heritage Handicap 6f
A strong pace should suit Jumby back in trip here. Charlie and Deasy are with Richard Fahey’s (good record in this) Strike Red whilst Steve makes a solid case for Apollo One.
- Tom – Jumby / Final Song
- Steve – Apollo One (w/p)
- Charlie – Strike Red (w/p)
- Deasy – Tactical and Strike Red (both w/p)
14:25 Sat – Suffolk Handicap 1m1f
I’m backing Forest Falcon as I think he’ll trade a good bit shorter. I’ll likely get out in the run. The rest of the team are all behind Movin Time under impressive claimer Harry Reed.
- Tom – Forest Falcon
- Steve – Movin Time
- Charlie – Movin Time
- Deasy – Movin Time
15:00 Sat – Palace House Stakes 5f
Steve thinks the outsider of the field is a bet here. I can’t disagree but am just having a small bet on the likely favourite who should continue improving this year.
- Tom – Twilight Calls
- Steve – Whenthedealinsdone (w/p)
- Charlie – Khadam (w/p)
- Deasy – Came From the Dark
