Tom Stanley is here to cover the calm before the Ascot storm…
A modest weekend of racing before Royal Ascot but it’s a decent one punting-wise given the number of runners.
For that reason, we’ve no lays this week but the usual best bets at the end.

13:40 Sandown – Trafalgar Square Handicap (1m1f)
Steve says De Sousa is riding well and he’s not worried about Vee Sight needing the run. Hamaki is bred for further than he’s been running over and is the selection of Adele whilst I’m keen on Maplewood, who should appreciate the return to further.
- Tom – Maplewood
- Adele – Hamaki (place)
- Steve – Vee Sight
14:00 York – Queen Mother’s Cup Handicap (1m4f)
Dash Of Spice for Adele who has solid backform and she’s a fan of the rider. I like a last time out course and distance winner which looks very strong form for the grade given the prize money that was on offer. A leap of faith is required says Steve for his shout but he’s looking fairly treated.
- Tom – Topanticipation
- Adele – Dash of Spice (place)
- Steve – Throne Hall
14:15 Sandown – Claremont Handicap (1m)
Adele is not so keen on market leader Encouraged, who may want a little more cut on the ground. Sheer Rocks gets the vote from both Adele and Steve who was keen over further last time and should appreciate the drop back to a mile. I like Ouzo who I believe is being aimed at the Hunt Cup and needs to win to get in.
- Tom – Ouzo
- Adele – Sheer Rocks
- Steve – Sheer Rocks
14:35 York – JCB Handicap (7f)
We’re all looking at the top two in the betting and not going mad. I thought Boardman looks progressive and should cope with a 4lb rise. The ground will be fine if it quickens up. Adele is slightly worried about him under top weight and is sticking with the current second favourite Maywake.
- Tom – Boardman
- Adele – Maywake
- Steve – Boardman
Bet Now
14:50 Sandown – Scurry Stakes (5f)
Adele makes the point about the size of Live In The Dream who isn’t the biggest and should appreciate being back in his own age group. He might get an easy time of it in front too and he’s our team steam.
- Tom – Live In The Dream
- Adele – Live In The Dream
- Steve – Live In The Dream
15:05 York – Race To The Ebor Grand Cup Stakes (1m6f)
Steve argues Without A Fight is unexposed and should appreciate the step back up in trip. I agree and his form, particularly out in Dubai, looks strong. Adele is with Kemari (she suggests Paul will go forward on Euchen Glen for what it’s worth) who is proven at the trip and looked a very good horse last year.
- Tom – Without A Fight
- Adele – Kemari
- Steve – Without A Fight
15:20 Chester – 7f Handicap
Adele and I are with Roman Dragon who shaped well at Haydock last time when just getting caught. He should lead here. Steve thinks the 34.0 about Dirtyoldtown is far too big to ignore. He argues he’s a good bit better than we saw at Haydock last time.
- Tom – Roman Dragon
- Adele – Roman Dragon
- Steve – Dirtyoldtown (w/p)
15:40 York – Pavers Foundation Catherine Memorial Sprint Handicap (6f)
Watchya is the selection of Steve and I and he looks progressive. I like where he’s drawn (though Steve would prefer slightly higher) and I think this sharp six and a strong pace will really suit. Adele is with Atomic Lady who she still feels is well treated and thinks could progress.
- Tom – Watchya
- Adele – Atomic Lady (w/p)
- Steve – Watchya (w/p)
Best Bets
- Tom – Ouzo (14:15 Sandown)
- Adele – Live In The Dream (14:50 Sandown)
- Steve – Spirit Mixer (15:55 Chester)
