Tom Stanley is joined by Donn McClean and Steve Jones to preview the rest of the week’s action at Goodwood and Galway.
It’s been a fantastic and dramatic few days between Goodwood and Galway and more of the same through to Saturday you would imagine. As we have had no declarations at the time of recording for the Stewards’ Cup the draw couldn’t be taken into account.
We start with the Thursday feature for the fillies.
Goodwood Thursday – Nassau Stakes (15:35)
Donn and Steve very much in the three-year-old camp with Ryan Moore’s mount and that age group have a good record in this race. I’m far from against her but think Lady Bowthorpe could the best of these over this trip and is worth supporting at the prices (5.0).
- Donn – Joan Of Arc
- Steve – Joan Of Arc
- Tom – Lady Bowthorpe Best Bet
Goodwood Thursday – Richmond Stakes (14:25)
Donn is with Ebro River who should appreciate getting back on easy ground. No strong opinion from me here but I did think the track would suit Clive Cox’s filly and she looks overpriced. Steve is with the filly at the top of the betting.
- Donn – Ebro River
- Steve – Asymmetric
- Tom – Caturra
Goodwood Thursday – Gordon Stakes (15:00)
My horse to follow this year lines up and he looks a far better ride having been gelded. Donn thinks the O’Brien second string is overpriced but Steve is most confident with Third Realm being his best bet of the day.
- Donn – Sir Lucan
- Steve – Third Realm Best Bet
- Tom – Yibir
Galway Thursday – Galway Hurdle (18:15)
Donn’s best bet here in a notoriously tough handicap but he makes a strong case. I’m with a Grade 1 winner dropping back into a handicap while Steve makes a swift case for Magic Tricks.
- Donn – Winner Takes Itall Best Bet
- Steve – Magic Tricks
- Tom – Belfast Banter
Goodwood Friday – King George (15:35)
All about Battaash here and we all argue he’s a fair price (2.37). This is his track and his day and I like his low draw too. Best bet material.
- Donn – Battaash
- Steve – Battaash
- Tom – Battaash Best Bet
Goodwood Friday – Thoroughbred Stakes (14:25)
Donn sitting this one out but Steve and I differ on the favourite. He’s the best horse in the race but, at the prices, I think he’s worth taking on at Goodwood from his draw. Can see this being messy.
- Donn – No bet
- Steve – Baaeed
- Tom – Small lay Baaeed
Goodwood Friday – Golden Mile Handicap (15:00)
Donn thinks Maydanny is the one to be with and I’m with Mark Johnston’s other horse, as well as an old favourite in this contest. Steve saves his best bet for this in the form of Godolphin’s Path Of Thunder and is adamant that the draw plays a huge part in this race.
- Donn – Maydanny
- Steve – Path Of Thunder Best Bet
- Tom – Qaader / Escobar
Galway Friday – Guinness Handicap Hurdle (17:30)
Step forward Donn McClean! No prices for this but Donn has a shortlist of three with his strongest fancy being Place Des Vosges.
- Donn – Place Des Vosges / My Sister Sarah / Lynwood Gold
- Steve – No Bet
- Tom – No Bet
Goodwood Saturday – Stewards’ Cup (15:40)
Prices but not declarations here so very much in the dark regards the draw. I think Meraas is worth backing now as, being one of the pace angles, he’ll only shorten from 21.0. Donn and Steve want a few on side but are most confident with Hurricane Ivor and he’s Donn’s best bet.
- Donn – Hurricane Ivor Best Bet / Summerghand
- Steve – Hurricane Ivor / Atalanta’s Boy
- Tom – Meraas
Best of luck for the rest of the week!
