Tom Stanley is back from a week hiatus and brings you the best Newcastle and Newbury tips from the podcast team…
It’s a monster Saturday in the UK with Grade 1 action in the form of the Fighting Fifth and the feature betting heat of the weekend, the Ladbrokes Trophy. There’s a very strong Irish challenge, shock horror, and a massive field, as it should be. The same can’t be said for all the races this weekend but the lack of rain has in part led to that. We start with the Friday feature…
Friday – Long Distance Hurdle (15:00 Newbury)
It’s tricky but the long and short of it is that nobody is with Paisley Park in first-time cheekpieces. I want to lay if he gets any shorter. Steve thinks Lisnager Oscar is the value whilst Adele was impressed enough with Indefatigable at Wetherby that she wants her on side here.
- Tom – Lay Paisley Park if 3.0 or shorter
- Steve – Lisnager Oscar
- Adele – Indefatigable
- Rixy – No bet
Saturday – Ladbrokes Trophy (15:00 Newbury)
Plenty goin up here. Rixy and I are looking to the Irish and the top of the market. Steve is with last year’s winner and also one at a big price, both win and place. Adele thinks the return to handicap company will suit Kitty’s Light.
- Tom – Eklat De Rire
- Steve – One More Fluerie & Cloth Cap
- Adele – Kittys Light win & place
- Rixy – Ontheropes
Saturday – 2m 6f Handicap Chase (13:15 Newbury)
The Tizzard yard are way ahead of where they were last season and for that reason, I like the progressive Kauto The King. Adele and Rixy like Kalooki for another team going well, though Adele has concerns about his jumping. Steve argues best value is Espoir De Teillee, who likes bananas.
- Tom – Kauto The King
- Steve – Espoir De Teillee win & place
- Adele – Kalooki small win
- Rixy – Kalooki
Saturday – 2m 4f Handicap Hurdle (13:50 Newbury)
Both Adele and I think Glory And Fortune will be suited by this trip. Rixy suggests Annsam is a lot bigger than he should be under young Isabel Williams whilst Steve puts up Black Mischief at a similar price.
- Tom – Glory And Fortune
- Steve – Black Mischief win & place
- Adele – Glory And Fortune
- Rixy – Annsam win & place
Saturday – Intermediate Handicap Hurdle (14:25 Newbury)
Very disappointing renewal and the only confidence comes from Adele with Soaring Glory. No official bet but Rixy argues the other way and is close to laying him. Little consensus or excitement about this.
- Tom – No bet
- Steve – No bet
- Adele – Soaring Glory
- Rixy – No bet – shite renewal for a race two Champion Hurdlers have won in the last decade

Saturday – 2m Handicap Chase (15:35 Newbury)
Rixy’s best bet of the day here in the form of Numitor who won well at Wetherby last time. I’m with Grey Diamond who should get his ground and improve for his reappearance. Steve gives Dan Skelton’s charge the vote in a first time tongue-tie.
- Tom – Grey Diamond
- Steve – Eclair D’Ainay
- Adele – No bet
- Rixy – Numitor win & place
Saturday – Fighting Fifth (15:15 Newcastle)
Major shock here with Steve not going for SIlver Streak but instead for Sceau Royal. Rixy is in the same camp. I’ve, naturally, gone for Silver Streak, not just to annoy Steve but I do think he’s the pick at the prices given his ground. Adele thinks Epatante will outclass them.
- Tom – Silver Streak
- Steve – Sceau Royale
- Adele – Epatante
- Rixy – Sceau Royal win & place
Saturday – Nov Handicap Chase (13:30 Newcastle)
Not all that competitive but Adele and Steve go for Valleres up in trip after his staying on effort at Newbury.
- Tom – No bet
- Steve – Valleres
- Adele – Valleres
- Rixy – No bet
Saturday – Rehearsal Chase (14:05 Newcastle)
Again I’m sitting this one out though was closest to Aye Right. Rixy is dead against Good Boy Bobby, Steve with the likely favourite, and Adele with Cool MIx after some positive words from rider Conor O’Farrell
- Tom – No bet
- Steve – The Ferry Master
- Adele – Cool Mix
- Rixy – Good Boy Bobby place lay
Best Bets
- Tom – Eklat De Rire (15:00 Newbury) / Gringo D’aubrelle (13:01 Fairyhouse)
- Steve – Rainyday Woman (12.10 Newbury) (non-runner)
- Adele – Glory And Fortune (13:50 Newbury)
- Rixy – Numitor (15:35 Newbury)
Best of luck!
