Busy week of racing to-date and Tom Stanley is back to preview the weekend’s podcast picks from Natalie Green and Declan Rix for the Newmarket July festival…
It’s a monster weekend between 3 tracks and 11 races covered on the podcast. There are some big field handicaps, if that’s your thing, and we start with a fascinating renewal of the Darley July Cup:
Newmarket, York & Ascot Saturday 🐎@_tomstanley_ | @HawkWing2002 | @natsjanegreen

16:25 Newmarket – Darley July Cup Stakes
We are all in agreement that the favourite is worth taking on at this track given his run style. Natalie and I are with Flaming Rib who ran well from up with the pace at Royal Ascot. I’ll also play Double Or Bubble four places. Rixy thinks the Platinum Jubilee 2nd is the bet at the prices.
- Tom – Double Or Bubble 4 places / Flaming Rib
- Natalie – Flaming Rib
- Rixy – Creative Force
13:45 York – John Smith’s Racing Handicap
Eilean Dubh is back over a far more suitable trip here and is a course and distance winner. He’s Rixy’s bet of the weekend. Natalie is chancing Blue For You on third start for David O’Meara.
- Tom – Eilean Dubh
- Natalie – Blue For You
- Rixy – Eilean Dubh
14:05 Newmarket – Bedford Lodge Hotel & Spa Fillies’ Handicap
Noy the deepest race and I make favourite Kidwah the one to beat. She should be fine over the extra furlong and I like the way she goes about her racing. Natalie is a fan of John Quinn’s Truly Acclaimed who is progressing nicely.
- Tom – Kidwah
- Natalie – Truly Acclaimed
- Rixy – No bet
14:20 York – John Smith’s Silver Cup Stakes
Natalie wants the forecast of Thunderous to beat Without A Fight whilst Rixy is with the latter in a modest renewal.
- Tom – No bet
- Natalie – Straight Forecast
- Rixy – Without A Fight
14:40 Newmarket – B365 Mile Handicap
Rixy makes the point that Jimi Hendrix did well to finish where he did at Ascot having been up with the pace throughout. Natalie and I are with Laasudood (Natlaie’s best bet) who looked to win with a bit in hand last time.
- Tom – Laasudood
- Natalie – Laasudood
- Rixy – Jimi Hendrix
15:00 Ascot – Heritage Handicap
Lovely Mama for Natalie looking to get the hatrick up. I fancy Tabdeed is still well treated and you can put a like through his run at the Royal meeting. I’ll also chance course and distance winner Stone Of Destiny.
- Tom – Tabdeed / Stone Of Destiny
- Natalie – Lovely Mana
- Rixy – No bet

15:15 Newmarket – Superlative Stakes
Small stakes for the lot of us. Victory Dance was hammered in the betting on debut and looks a nice horse. Rixy is a little worried about the ground for him and prefers Isaac Shelby whilst Natlie is with the unbeaten Lion Of War.
- Tom – Victory Dance
- Natalie – Lion Of War
- Rixy – Isaac Shelby
15:35 Ascot – Fred Cowley MBE Summer Mile Stakes
I don’t trust Chindit and want to lay him against these. I’d most likely be with Mutasaabeq who is the choice of Rixy having challenged from an unpromising position at Epsom.
- Tom – Lay Chindit 3.0 or shorter
- Natalie – No bet
- Rixy – Mutasaabeq
15:50 Newmarket – Bunbury Cup
Rhoscolyn for Rixy and I who should be ridden closer to the pace than at Ascot. My bet of the day is Vafortino who got no run in that same race. Natalie likes Jumby, who ran a good race at the Royal meeting without getting the breaks.
- Tom – Vafortino & Rhoscolyn w/pl
- Natalie – Jumby
- Rixy – Rhoscolyn w/pl
16:05 York – John Smith’s Cup Handicap
Intellogent is 4lb well in and needs support. The trip should suit. Certain Lad likes it here and could get the run of things for Rixy whilst Natalie wants a couple on side win and place.
- Tom – Intellogent w/pl
- Natalie – Marajaan, Great Gadian w/pl
- Rixy – Certain Lad w/pl
16:40 York – John Smith’s City Wall Stakes
Rixy and Natalie are of the opinion Winter Power isn’t one to be with so I’m on my own in supporting her for this drop in grade. Natalie wants Korker on side now back at the scene of his last success.
- Tom – Winter Power
- Natalie – Korker
- Rixy – Lay Winter Power
Best Lays
- Tom – Lay Chindit 3.0 or shorter
- Natalie – No lay
- Rixy – Lay Artorius first two places
Best Bets
- Tom – Vafortino w/pl (15:50 Newmarket)
- Natalie – Laasudood (14:40 Newmarket)
- Rixy – Eilean Dubh (13:45 York)
Best of luck!
